Mission

The St. Lawrence Coalition was created to persuade government bodies to issue a moratorium on oil and gas exploration and exploitation in the Gulf of St. Lawrence as soon as possible.

The St. Lawrence Coalition aims at bringing the gulf communities together, which share the same concerns and appreciate the natural resources of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Our coalition is inter-provincial as five provinces are involved: Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Objectives and actions

The St. Lawrence Coalition works towards the following objectives:

  • The necessity of a moratorium. We aim to convince individuals, organizations and government officials from the five provinces that a moratorium on oil and gas drilling is necessary for the entire Gulf of St. Lawrence.
  • Have a moratorium issued. We aim to have the five provincial governments declare a moratorium before the first exploratory drilling operations begin in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
  • Work together. We will invite the five coastal provinces of the St. Lawrence to work together to discuss and define future development options in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
  • Inform and create interest. We will inform the general public about social and environmental impacts of oil and gas drilling. We want citizens to be educated about these matters and to make informed decisions. We want tourism, fishery as well as other industries that would be affected by hydrocarbon exploitation to get involved.
  • Encourage action. We want citizens, organizations and local authorities to take initiative on this hydrocarbon issue.

In order to reach these objectives, the St. Lawrence Coalition is committed to take action in the following two manners:

  • Publicly take a stand. As a collective group, we will request that the appropriate governmental authorities issue a moratorium. We will publicly make our position clear. We will inform the general public about the impact of oil-and-gas drilling in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
  • Work as partners. The coalition members will constructively work with different people or organizations who are involved in this issue, which include governmental, parliamentary and institutional officials.

By joining the St. Lawrence Coalition, you agree that a moratorium on oil and gas exploration and exploitation in the Gulf of St. Lawrence should be issued as soon as possible. (Reminder: the moratorium on the Québec portion of the Gulf may soon be lifted. If lifted, there would be no moratorium in the Gulf whatsoever.)

A moratorium may be requested for many different reasons. Members may have their own values and preoccupations to support the call for a moratorium.

Members of the coalition retain the freedom to undertake individual action. They will receive written notification about upcoming coalition events and will be invited to take part.

Who can join the St. Lawrence Coalition?

Anyone can sign up: individuals, organizations, municipalities, etc.

Fill the form

"As a member of the St. Lawrence Coalition, I am requestingthat the concerned government bodies issue a moratorium on oil and gas exploration and exploitation in the entire Gulf of St. Lawrence."
